Vox Populi

A couple of weeks ago, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette ran a letter to the editor from a lawyer in Hot Springs named Connie Meskimen who blamed Daylight Savings Time for global warming. This was pretty loony even for the Letters section and produced an unusual response from incredulous readers.

Turns out Meskimen claims it was a joke. This made Snopes.com. Hit the link to read an interview with Meskimen about all of this. They also include a sampling of his opinion about our associate PM.

The first time I saw one of these--and I think it was real--was in 1971 in the Chattanooga News Free Press. It was from a farmer from Sand Mountain who was convinced the extra hour of daylight was going to burn up his tomatoes. The first line of the letter started out "I shore [sic] am against this daylight savings time."

Of course it was a joke. A very old and stupid joke. Mr. Meskimen is not an idiot, he's just an ass.

And I'm still not going to lunch with him.
